Dopo aver salito - o meglio cavalcato - le scale che portano all’ufficio del Preside, uno bussa alla porta, entra, ed è accolto non solo dal viso del o della Preside, ma anche dal russare proveniente dai muri. Veniamo introdotti per la prima volta nell’ufficio del Preside, e alle decorazioni che contiene, in Harry Potter e la Camera dei Segreti (HP CS12). Qui, i ritratti vengono visti solo dormire, è solo in Harry Potter e l’Ordine della Fenice che i ritratti dei Presidi cominciano ad avere uno scopo e a rivelarsi come importanti.
Comunque, sto andando troppo avanti.
“La Profezia Perduta” di Mary GrandPré © 2005 Warner Bros., usata dalla permissionFirst, una nota al titolo: partendo dal presupposto che la durata dell’incarico come Preside di Hogwarts di Albus Silente sia stata nella media, in 1000 anni, Hogwarts dovrebbe aver avuto tra i 20 e i 25 Presidi. Questo, ovviamente, a meno che Silente non sia stato in carica per un tempo eccezionalmente lungo, allora ci sarebbero stati molti più Presidi. Per il bene della tesi, sosterrò che il numero fosse intorno ai 20.
I ritratti degli ex-Presidi condividono molte delle caratteristiche che hanno gli altri quadri nel Mondo della Magia, possono infatti viaggiare in altri quadri che li ritraggono (a differenza dei quadri di persone di fantasia), possono conversare gli uni con gli altri e con le persone viventi, e sono piuttosto limitati nei loro discorsi (WEB LINKEBF). Ad ogni modo, essere ritratti di ex-Presidi ha concesso loro una qualità unica. I ritratti sono vincolati a servire il o la corrente (accettato/a) Preside (HP OF22). Questo fornisce un interessantissimo dispositivo letterario. Con questo obbligo, i ritratti devono rispettare le istruzioni del Preside, quindi potrebbero rispondere a delle domande, offrire aiuto, o viaggiare verso altri posti come vedette. Questo ci porta, naturalmente, a Harry Potter.
Con la morte di Albus Silente, Harry si ritrova praticamente da solo nella sua caccia agli Horcrux, anche se Ron, Hermione, e magari Ginny potrebbero aiutare. Mentre grazie alle sue esperienze Harry è diventato saggio nel corso degli anni, è comunque appena maggiorenne e avrà indubbiamente bisogno di assistenza nella sua ricerca. A giudicare dalle azioni di Silente e dalle domande della McGrannit alla fine di Harry Potter e il Principe Mezzosangue (HP PM29), gli altri membri dell’Ordine della Fenice non dovrebbero essere completamente a conoscenza degli Horcrux, o Silente avrebbe avuto almeno un po’ di aiuto. Questo lascia Harry a consultare la sua unica fonte di informazioni sugli Horcrux: il ritratto di Albus Silente.
Si pensi, come accaduto alla fine de Il Principe Mezzosangue, al momento in cui la Professoressa McGrannit diventerà la nuova Preside. Come membro dell’Ordine della Fenice, la sua posizione sarebbe di grande aiuto per Harry. Anche se Harry non torna ad Hogwarts per proseguire la sua istruzione, Harry avrà senza ombra di dubbio bisogno di tornarci, in quanto quello è probabilmente il più potente luogo magico di tutto il Regno Unito, se non del mondo. Se ammesso ad entrare nell’ufficio della Preside, Harry avrebbe la possibilità di fare domande, con le istruzioni della McGrannit, ai ritratti degli ex-Presidi, che, tra tutti, possiedono l’equivalente di mille anni di sapere storico e magico. Silente, anche se limitato a “frasi fatte” (WEB LINKEBF), potrebbe comunque essere in grado di offrire aiuto a Harry, se non delle istruzioni su come usare correttamente il Pensatoio. Dal momento che Silente sembra essere esperto nei rapporti con le creature (si veda, per esempio, il suo consiglio ad Hagrid su come trattare i giganti in HP OF20) potrebbe essere in qualche modo di aiuto nel convincere altri esseri a unirsi alla causa dell’Ordine. Comunque, Silente potrebbe non essere l’unico Preside ad aiutare Harry nella sua impresa. Armando Dippet, il predecessore di Silente, potrebbe forse essere d’aiuto nell’approfondimento della conoscenza di Harry circa il modo di pensare del giovane Tom Riddle. Gli altri Presidi potrebbero avere altri ritratti in altri luoghi del mondo magico, magari non importanti come il Ministero o il San Mungo, ma comunque sempre utili.
In conclusione, Harry Potter si ritrova davanti una prova piuttosto ardua dal momento che, finalmente, per la prima volta in quasi trent’anni, qualcuno è sulla strada giusta per sconfiggere il Signore Oscuro. Lungo la sua strada, Harry avrà bisogno di molto aiuto, ma certamente non è da solo in questa prova. Con la creazione dell’Esercito di Silente, Harry ha inconsapevolmente formato anche lui qualcosa di simile a un esercito, in possesso di molte conoscenze utili al loro compito. La potenza degli incantesimi non è la sola cosa necessaria in una battaglia di questo tipo; uno ha anche bisogno di una buona quantità di conoscenza e saggezza. Mentre i membri dell’Ordine della Fenice saranno di aiuto, i mille anni di conoscenza ben nascosti nel Castello di Hogwarts certamente non devono essere ignorati.

20 Heads Are Better Than One: 1000 Years of Headmasters by Zachary Seymour
After walking—or rather riding—up the staircase to the Headmaster’s office, one knocks on the door, enters, and is greeted not only by the face of the Headmaster, or Headmistress, but by soft snores coming from the wall. We are first introduced to the Headmaster’s office, and the decorations it contains, in Chamber of Secrets (CS12). Here, the portraits are seen only sleeping, it is not until Order of the Phoenix that the portraits of the Headmasters begin to serve a purpose and to reveal themselves as important. However, I am getting ahead of myself.
"The Lost Prophecy" by Mary GrandPré © 2005 Warner Bros., used by permissionFirst, a note on the title: assuming Albus Dumbledore had an average tenure as Hogwarts Headmaster, over 1000 years, Hogwarts would have had some where between 20 and 25 Headmasters and Headmistresses. That is, of course, unless Dumbledore had an exceptionally long tenure, then there would have been many more Headmasters. For the sake of argument, I am going to assume the number was around 20.
The portraits of the former Heads share many of the same qualities that other portraits in the Wizarding World have, in that they can travel to other portraits of themselves (unlike paintings of fictional people), they can converse with one another and living persons, and they are rather limited in their speech (WEB LINKEBF). However, being portraits of former Headmasters has gained them a unique quality. The portraits are duty-bound to serve the current (accepted) Headmaster or Headmistress (OP22). This provides a very interesting plot device. With this duty, the portraits must respect the instructions of the Headmaster, so that they may answer questions, offer advice, or travel to other locations as lookout. This brings us, naturally, to Harry Potter.
With the death of Albus Dumbledore, Harry is now mostly alone in his hunt for the Horcruxes, although Ron, Hermione, and possibly Ginny may help. While through his experiences Harry has become wise beyond his years, he is still only just of age and will undoubtedly need assistance in his search. Judging by Dumbledore’s actions and McGonagall’s questions at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (HBP29), the other members of the Order of the Phoenix must not be entirely aware of the Horcruxes, or Dumbledore would have had at least some of the help. This leaves Harry to consult his only remaining source of information on Horcruxes: the portrait of Albus Dumbledore.
One imagines, as happened at the end of Half-Blood Prince, that Professor McGonagall will retain her spot as Headmistress. As a member of the Order, her position would be very beneficial to Harry. Even if Harry does not return to Hogwarts for formal schooling, Harry will undoubtedly need to go there, as it is probably the most powerfully magical place in wizarding Britain, if not the world. If allowed entrance to the Headmistress’s office, Harry would be left to question, with the instruction of McGonagall, the portraits of the former Heads, who, amongst themselves, possess one thousand years worth of historical and magical knowledge. Dumbledore, while limited to “catchphrases” (WEB LINKEBF), should still be able to offer some advice to Harry, if not instruction on the proper use of the Pensieve. As Dumbledore seems to be rather knowledgeable in the subject of creature relations (see, for example, his advice to Hagrid on how to treat the giants in OP20) he may be of some assistance in convincing other beings to join the Order’s cause. However, Dumbledore should not be the only Headmaster who could be of assistance in Harry’s quest. Armando Dippet, Dumbledore’s predecessor, may perhaps be of help in furthering Harry’s knowledge of young Tom Riddle’s mindset. Other Headmasters may also have portraits in other wizarding locations, less prominent than the Ministry or St. Mungo’s, but still helpful.
In conclusion, Harry Potter has quite a large task in front of him, though finally, for the first time in nearly 30 years, someone is on the right track to vanquish the Dark Lord. Along the way, Harry will need a lot of assistance, but he is certainly not alone in that. With the instruction of Dumbledore’s Army, Harry unknowingly developed himself something of an army, possessing a lot of knowledge necessary to their task. Spell power is not all that is necessary in a battle of this sort; one also needs a good amount of knowledge and wisdom. While members of the Order of the Phoenix will be of assistance, the 1000 years of knowledge tucked unnoticeably away at Hogwarts Castle is certainly not something to be ignored.
