A volte è difficile credere come i Babbani riescano a rimanere così inconsapevoli del mondo magico: ecco alcuni dei momenti in cui il popolo non magico era completamente all’oscuro…
1. Il giorno in cui il serpente è riuscito a scappare misteriosamente
Quante volte il vetro scompare in una casa di rettili? Mentre i Dursley sapevano perfettamente cosa accadde, tennero la bocca cucita. Siamo onesti: c’era solo una spiegazione per quel misterioso fenomeno.
2. Quando c’è stata tutta quella strana attività animale
Uno stormo di uccelli notturni che sfreccia su una casa? Lettere che si fanno strada nelle bottiglie di latte e nelle uova? O è lo scherzo migliore di sempre, oppure c’è magia in corso.
3. Quella macchina volante...
Un paio di Babbani con occhi di lince hanno avvistato una misteriosa Ford Anglia volante, ma non erano neanche lontanamente vicini al numero di persone che avrebbero dovuto farlo. Soprattutto considerando che stava volteggiando sopra Londra quando il sistema di invisibilità smise di funzionare.
4. Qualcuno ha visto il Nottetempo?
Questo autobus a tre piani, violentemente violaceo, sfreccia in tutto il paese con un botto onnipotente, ma resta segreto. Il Nottetempo appare ogni volta che una strega o un mago appoggia la bacchetta sul marciapiede e poi svanisce. Secondo Stan Picchietto, i Babbani “non ci sentono e non ci vedono. Non si accorgono mai di nulla, quelli”.
5. La casa che nessuno può vedere
Accettiamo che il numero 12 di Grimmauld Place sia fortemente protetto da un incantesimo per mantenere i suoi residenti al sicuro dai maghi oscuri. Ma dai, i vicini! Non hanno mai sentito il ritratto della Signora Black urlare o notato il via vai di persone vestite in modo strano che appaiono all’esterno e poi scompaiono velocemente?
6. Che ne dite di tutti quei visitatori dell’ospedale magico?
Lungi dall’essere nascosto in profondità sotterranee come il Ministero della Magia, l’Ospedale di San Mungo è accessibile tramite un grande magazzino disabitato a Londra. Eppure, mentre si lamentano che non è mai aperto, i Babbani non sembrano notare gruppi di persone che conversano con un manichino e poi si arrampicano attraverso una vetrina per visitare i loro cari. Usate gli occhi, gente.
7. La grande missione di salvataggio da Hogwarts al Ministero della Magia
Quando degli adolescenti volano in tutto il paese su Thestral, si potrebbe pensare che qualche strano babbano possa fare due più due. Certo, solo coloro che hanno assistito alla morte possono vedere i Thestral, ma gli altri vedrebbero comunque persone sfrecciare nell’aria, apparentemente senza supporto, verso Londra — cosa che basterebbe a far girare la testa.
8. Il viaggio finale da Privet Drive
Innanzitutto, quanto sono distratti i residenti di Privet Drive, che non hanno notato sei anni di eventi straordinari? Ma il fatto che 13 persone — alcune identiche al ragazzino della porta accanto, e una delle quali è un mezzo gigante — abbiano lasciato il giardino in un convoglio con moto e sidecar avrebbe dovuto attirare l’attenzione. E se non lo avesse fatto, la battaglia a mezz’aria con esplosioni di fuoco e innumerevoli getti di luce rossa e verde avrebbe sicuramente causato qualche occhiata verso il cielo. Fuochi d’artificio, forse…?
9. Quell’arrivo improvviso in Tottenham Court Road
Hermione non aveva idea del motivo per cui avesse scelto questo posto per Materializzarsi dopo che i Mangiamorte avevano interrotto il matrimonio di Bill e Fleur, ma pensava che fosse meno probabile trovarli nel mondo dei Babbani. Aveva ragione almeno su una cosa: i Babbani non avevano notato assolutamente nulla. L’apparizione improvvisa, dal nulla, di tre adolescenti disorientati e spaventati avrebbe dovuto essere sufficiente per lasciare di stucco chiunque.

Sometimes it can beggar belief how Muggles can manage to remain so unaware of the wizarding world - here are a few of the times when non-magical folk were at their most oblivious...
1. The day that snake mysteriously managed to escape
How often does glass just vanish in a reptile house? While the Dursleys knew perfectly well what happened, they stayed tight-lipped. Let’s be honest, there was only one explanation for that mysterious phenomenon.
2. When all that strange animal activity was going on
A flurry of nocturnal birds zooming in on one house? Letters making their way into milk bottles and eggs? That’s either the prank to end all pranks, or there’s magic afoot.
3. And that flying car…
A couple of eagle-eyed Muggles spotted a mysterious Ford Anglia flying around but nowhere near as many as should have done. Especially considering that it was floating above London when the invisibility booster stopped working.
4. Anyone seen a Knight Bus?
This triple-decker, violently purple bus flings itself all around the country with an almighty bang, yet remains on the down-low. The Knight Bus appears whenever a witch or wizard flings out their wand arm at the kerb, and then vanishes. According to Stan Shunpike, Muggles “Don’ listen properly, do they? Don’ look properly either. Never notice nuffink, they don’.”
5. The house that nobody can see
We accept that Number 12, Grimmauld Place is heavily protected with charms to keep its residents safe from Dark wizards. But come on, neighbours! Did you really not hear the portrait of Mrs Black bawling or notice the flurry of mysteriously cloaked people appearing outside and then disappearing as quickly?
6. What about all those visitors to the wizard hospital?
Far from being hidden deep underground like the Ministry of Magic, St Mungo's Hospital is accessed via a disused department store in London. Yet while complaining that it’s never open, Muggles don’t seem to notice groups of people conversing with a mannequin and then clambering through a plate glass window to visit their loved ones. Use your eyes, people.
7. The grand rescue mission from Hogwarts to the Ministry of Magic
When six teenagers fly across the country on Thestrals, you’d think the odd Muggle might have done a double-take. Granted, only those who have witnessed death can see Thestrals, but then they’d just see people zooming through mid-air, apparently unsupported, toward London – which would be an even weirder sight to get your head around.
8. The final journey from Privet Drive
First of all, how self-involved are the residents of Privet Drive that they’ve not noticed six years’ worth of weird and wonderful goings on? But the occurrence of 13 people – several of which look exactly like the kid next door, and one of which is a half-giant – departing the garden in an airborne convoy that includes a motorbike and sidecar would, you’d think, grab your attention. And if that didn’t, the mid-air battle that featured blasts of fire and countless jets of red and green light would surely cause a few skyward glances. Fireworks perhaps…?
9. And that sudden arrival in Tottenham Court Road
Hermione had no idea why she chose this busy spot to Apparate to after the Death Eaters crashed Bill and Fleur's wedding, but she thought they were less likely to be found out in the Muggle world. She was right on one account at least; the Muggles didn’t notice a thing. The instant appearance out of nowhere of three disorientated and frightened looking teenagers should have been enough to stop any Muggle in their tracks.
