Luna Lovegood è chiaramente lo specchio di
Hermione Granger. Penso che il razionalismo di Hermione, che è una parte così importante della dinamica del trio, abbia un suo svantaggio: una riluttanza nel saltare prima di guardare; la paura dell'ignoto. Abbiamo visto Hermione bloccarsi quasi su ogni libro perché le sue ricerche non le avevano fornito la giusta risposta. Di solito, Ron e Harry devono attirare/stuzzicare/rallegrare Hermione una volta passate queste crisi («SEI UNA STREGA, SÌ O NO?»,
Ron Weasley PS16). Freud e Jung direbbero che la cosa di cui hai paura è ciò che hai seppellito dentro di te, la cosa che segretamente desideri fare. Ma ora abbiamo Luna che è l'opposto fisico di Hermione (capelli biondi e soffici invece che castani) la quale, come la Granger, è intelligente, anche se in un modo completamente diverso, ed incarna tutte le cose in cui l'altra è carente: l'intuizione e la fede. Non Fede con la F maiuscola -perché, per fortuna, non abbiamo ancora incontrato un sermone nei libri e, se mai succederà, mi metterò ad urlare-, ma la fede con la f minuscola, ossia credere nella possibilità del mondo di operare sulle leggi che trascendono i limiti della mera fisica, chimica e biologia (questo, dopo tutto, è un universo in cui funziona la
magia). Penso che l'annebbiamento di Luna disturbi Hermione proprio perché è ne è spaventata, ma penso che sia parte del sostegno di cui
Harry Potter ha bisogno per rimanere sano di mente quando negli anni a venire si troverà faccia a faccia con l'orrore dei misteri. Ed io so per certo che anche Luna costringerà Hermione a crescere; inoltre, che buffo, sarà un'altra persona con cui Hermione potrà battibeccare, oltre a Ron. Evviva!
Sono razionalista, io, ed amo Hermione per la sua logica ed il suo intelletto -e la sua lealtà-, ma penso che sia meraviglioso che
J. K. Rowling abbia inserito Luna e, con lei, una porta verso tutti quei misteri senza soluzione con cui l'
Ufficio Misteri ha avuto a che fare. Ciò consente a JKR di toccare temi come la morte, l'amore, il tempo e la responsabilità su più ampia scala rispetto semplicemente alla "vita all'interno della trama", senza ricorrere a un credo religioso o laico che avrebbe diminuito, anziché aumentato, l'impatto dei suoi libri, dal momento che qualunque convinzione che avesse sposato sarebbe stata in contrasto con quella del 90% o più dei suoi lettori.

Luna is clearly Hermione's mirror. I think Hermione's rationalism, which is such an important part of the trio's dynamic, has its downside: an unwillingness to leap before looking; a fear of the unknown. We've watched Hermione freeze up in just about every book because her studies haven't provided her with the answer. Usually Ron and Harry have to pull/prod/jolly Hermione past these crises ("Are you a witch or aren't you!"). Freud and Jung would say that the thing you're afraid of is the thing you buried, the thing you secretly want to do. But now we have Luna who is Hermione's physical photo-negative (blonde fluffy hair instead of brown), who is, like Hermione, brainy, if in an entirely different way, and who embodies all of the things Hermione most lacks: intuition and faith. Not big-F Faith, because, thankfully, we haven't gotten a straight sermon in the books yet, and if we do I'll scream. But little-f faith in the possibility of the world operating on laws that transcend the limits of mere physics, chemistry and biology. (This is, after all, a universe where magic works.) I think that Luna's 'fuzziness' gets under Hermione's skin precisely because it is so scary to her. But I think it is part of the support that Harry needs in order to stay sane while facing the horrors of the mysteries that he must face in the years to come. And I betcha knowing Luna forces Hermione to grow too. Besides, how fun, someone else for Hermione to bicker with. And possibly to fight over Ron with. Whooopee!
I'm a rationalist, myself, and love Hermione for her logic and her intellect--and her loyalty. But I think it is wonderful that JKR has inserted Luna, and with her a door to all of those unanswerable mysteries the Department of Mysteries has been struggling with. It allows JKR to touch on issues like death and love and time and responsibility on a larger scale than merely life-within-the-plot without resorting to a religious or even secular creed that would lessen, rather than increase, the books' impact, since whatever belief she espouses would be at odds with that of 90% or more of her readers.
