L'Hogwarts Express non è davvero un treno a vapore. Gli assomiglia e agisce come uno di quelli in certi modi, ma non lo è. È un dispositivo magico. Prende in prestito la sua forma e la sua funzione dai veri treni a vapore, ma non la tecnologia. È come le macchine del Ministero, il Nottetempo e la Radio Magica, che prendono in prestito anche loro la forma dalla tecnologia Muggle, ma sono dispositivi magici.
Le macchine dei maghi non sono macchine babbano. Non funzionano con la benzina o con il carbone o l’elettricità, ma con la magia. In alcuni casi, come l'Hogwarts Express, sono stati copiati da macchine babbane (e in questo caso è chiaramente una copia di un dispositivo babbano, poiché molte parti di esso non avrebbero alcuna funzione nella versione magica, ma sono chiaramente copiati dall'originale senza una sapere cosa fossero quelle parti). L’Hogwarts Express, alimentato dalla magia, va dove deve andare perché è quello che deve fare. La magia è più di ogni altra cosa l’intenzione di realizzare la realtà. L’Hogwarts Express si allontana verso nord perché è stato stregato per farlo.
Quindi, che dire della pista? Qualcuno, qualche tempo fa, è riuscito a trovare una soluzione perfetta e meravigliosa: l'Hogwarts Express utilizza la pista esistente per la maggior parte del viaggio, ma spinge via gli altri treni sulla linea o le vetture quando le incrocia. Segue lo stesso schema degli altri dispositivi di trasporto magici che abbiamo visto, il Nottetempo e le vetture del Ministero, e solo in qualche modo riesce a saltare / spremere / scivolare. Non è udito né visto da babbani perché, come sottolinea Stan Picchetto, "non si accorgono mai di nulla quelli” (Harry Potter e il Prigioniero di Azkaban, capitolo 3).
Il conducente e la guardia e la strega con il carrello sono l'equivalente di Ernie e Stan Picchetto: addestrati ad utilizzare dispositivi magici utilizzando la magia senza comprendere veramente la tecnologia da cui i loro dispositivi vengono copiati. Ernie sposta la ruota avanti e indietro ma non gestisce in modo specifico l'autobus lungo la strada, sta facendo il lavoro magico. Un giro potrebbe mandarli sul lato sinistro dell'autostrada o a metà strada per Torquay, a seconda di quello che intendeva fare.
Il treno in sé sembra dall'esterno una locomotiva ed è abbastanza simile anche all'interno, anche se credo sia probabile che siano state “aggiustate” le dimensioni interne per quello che serve (c'è sempre un altro compartimento, ma mai in più, sembra). A differenza del Nottetempo, che sembra abbastanza simile ad un autobus all'esterno, ma per niente come un autobus all'interno, l’Hogwarts Express sembra essere per la maggior parte delle apparenze un vero treno. Ma non lo è. È magico.

The Hogwarts Express is not really a steam train. It does look like one and it acts like one in certain key ways, but it isn't one. It's a magical device. It borrows its form and its intended function from real steam trains, but not the technology. It's like the Ministry cars, the Knight Bus, and Wizard's Wireless, which also borrow their form from Muggle technology but which are magical devices.
Wizarding "machines" aren't Muggle machines. They don't work on petrol or coal or electricity, they work by magic. In some cases, such as the Hogwarts Express, they are copied from Muggle machinery (and in this case it's clearly a copy of a Muggle device, since many parts of it would have no function in the wizarding version, but there they are, clearly copied from the Muggle original without an understanding of what those parts were for). The Hogwarts Express, powered by magic, goes where it's supposed to because that's what it's supposed to do. Magic is more than anything else intention made reality. The Hogwarts Express chugs away up north because it is magicked to do so.
So what about the track? Someone on the HP4GU list some time ago came up with a perfect and wonderful solution: the Hogwarts Express uses existing track for most of the journey, but just squeezes past the other trains on the line or cars at the crossings. It follows the same pattern as the other magical transportation devices we've seen, the Knight Bus and the Ministry cars, and just somehow manages to jump/squeeze/slip through. It's not heard or seen by Muggles because, as Stan Shunpike points out, "[t]hey never notice nuffink, they don'" (PA3).
The driver and the guard and the witch with the cart are the equivalent of Ernie Prang and Stan Shunpike: trained to operate magical devices using magic without really understanding the technology from which their devices are copied. Ernie shifts the wheel back and forth but doesn't really steer the bus along the road specifically, he's making the magic work. One turn could send them to the left side of the motorway or halfway to Torquay, depending on what he intended it to do.
The train itself looks like a train from the outside and pretty much looks like a train on the inside, although I think it's likely that it adjusts its interior dimensions for the task at hand (there is always one more compartment, but never an extra, it seems). Unlike the Knight Bus, which looks fairly similar to a bus on the outside but nothing like a bus on the inside, the Hogwarts Express seems to be to most appearances a real train. But it isn't. It's magic.
