Avendo recentemente fatto una rilettura di Harry Potter e il Calice di Fuoco, gli ultimi capitoli terrificanti e emotivi sono stati nella mia mente per molto. Questa mattina, contemplando brevemente cosa sarebbe potuto succedere se Cedric fosse stato l'unico a prendere la Coppa, sono tornata alla domanda eterna -
Perché fare della Coppa una Passaporta quando lo spazzolino di Harry avrebbe funzionato altrettanto bene?
Come il Grinch, siamo perplessi su questo, ma oggi una risposta mi ha colpito con la forza di una buona maledizione Impedimenta. Era così semplice. La risposta sta nella Passaporta stessa. Perché cosa sarebbe successo se le cose sarebbero andate bene per Voldemort?
Ok, siamo a
Little Hangleton, giugno, 1995. Voldemort e Codaliscia attendono la rovina delle loro esistenze - il giovane Harry Potter. Una volta arrivato, disorientato e spaventato, è legato alla tomba di Papà Riddle e costretto a fornire a Voldemort il suo sangue. Voldemort si reincarna nel grande cattivo del passato, a quel punto chiama i suoi mangiamorte, li castiga per un po' e poi attacca di Harry, dopo un rinvigorente gioco al gatto e topo.
(Ci siamo capiti finora? Ok, perché qui viene il bello.)
A questo punto Voldemort e i suoi servitori toccano la Passaporta e tornano a Hogwarts per iniziare un nuovo Regno di Terrore. Ecco perché la Passaporta era stata pianificata per tornare a Hogwarts.
Arrivano al di fuori del labirinto, con il corpo di Harry senza vita (dopo tutto è necessario esultare) e comincia a decimare la futura popolazione magica. Sono solo studenti (e non solo studenti Hogwarts, ma anche Beauxbatons e Durmstrang), preda facile. Anche nell'arena ci sono Karkaroff il codardo, Piton la spia, Bagman, il Ministro della Magia Cornelius Caramell, Silente, e, naturalmente, Crouch come Moody. Crouch non "dimenticò" di prendere la sua Pozione Polisucco. Non era necessario. Poteva cominciare a lanciare sortilegi come Moody (in tutto il caos chi poteva sapere da quale lato stava?) e dopo che la pozione aveva terminato il suo effetto, poteva combattere chiaramente come se stesso, accanto al suo Signore Oscuro.
Dopo la battaglia, Voldemort sarebbe stato la potenza assoluta e tutto andrebbe bene nel suo mondo.
Era così brillante. Era così semplice. Doveva funzionare.
Fortunatamente per noi, Harry aveva un asso nella manica (o piuttosto, una piuma di Fenice nella sua bacchetta) e riuscì a sventare il progetto di Voldemort ancora una volta.

Having recently done a GF re-read, the last terrifying and emotional chapters have been on my mind a lot. This morning, while briefly considering the What Might Have Been if Cedric had been the only one to grasp the Cup, I returned to the Eternal Question--
Why make the Cup a Portkey when Harry's toothbrush would work just as well?
Like the Grinch, we have all puzzled on this till our puzzlers were sore, but today an answer hit me with the force of a well-placed Impediment Curse. It was so simple. The answer lies in the Portkey itself. Because what if things had gone right for Voldemort?
Okay, it's Little Hangleton, June, 1995 [Y15]. Voldemort and Wormtail await the bane of their existences -- young Harry Potter. Once he arrives, disoriented and properly frightened, he is tied to Daddy Riddle's tombstone, and forced to provide Voldemort with a blood sample. Voldemort reincorporates into the Big Bad of yesteryear, at which point he calls in his Death Eaters, chastises them for a bit, and then disposes of Harry, after an invigorating game of cat and mouse.
(With me so far? Okay. Because here's where it gets good.)
At this point Voldemort and his minions touch the Portkey and return to Hogwarts to begin the new Reign of Terror. This is why the Portkey was rigged to return to Hogwarts.
They arrive outside the maze, with Harry's lifeless body (after all a good gloat is needed) and begin decimating the future wizarding population. They're merely students (and not just Hogwarts students either, but Beauxbatons and Durmstrang as well), easy prey. Also in the arena is Karkaroff the coward, Snape the spy, Bagman, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, Dumbledore, and, of course, Crouch as Moody. Crouch didn't just "forget" to take his Polyjuice Potion. It wasn't needed. He could begin hurling hexes as Moody (in all the chaos who could tell for which side he was playing?) and after the potion wore off, he could fight clearly as himself, alongside his Dark Lord.
After the battle, Voldemort would be in absolute power and all would be right in his world.
It was so brilliant. It was so simple. It should have worked.
Fortunately for us, Harry had an ace up his sleeve (or rather, a phoenix feather up his wand) and managed to foil Voldemort's plan once again.
